Themed Post 2 (05-10) My Favouritew Character from a Series
Sheldon Cooper: BAZINGA.
The TV series The Big Bang Theory is about
a group of friends who are very intelligent scientists and in their early 30’s struggling
to get a sound relationship with both their loving and professional lives and
Sheldon Cooper happens to be the most prestigious scientist of them all but
yet, he is the character which struggles the most due to his Asperger
condition, which makes him seem to be an
awkward and hard to deal with person, principally because of his sayings which
might seem a bit bizarre but are full of wit and intelligence and needless say,
entirely coated in sharp sarcasm.
His sarcasm, along the different chapters
leads him to have some quarrels with other members of the team, such as his
flat-mate or the neighbour living next door and who is a stereotypical
would-be-actress bimbo girl, arriving to the big city to test her chances and
who has began working as a waitress. The misunderstandings along the series
lead Sheldon to consider his social relating skills in order to make the most
of himself and exploiting his abilities, so at last, he tries to follow certain
social conventions by for instance casting a huge, bizarre smile every time he
makes an odd joke which makes him look even more ridiculous and in the end
turns out to be extremely funny and entertaining for the audience.
All the interventions he makes in order not
to sound clumsy or awkward are a proof he tries hard to fit in but in the end,
he really is a person with a strong Asperger syndrome and every time he tries
to sound nice, he sounds rude, and every time he means to be serious, he ends
up making fun of himself. All this makes the audience be in a constant
entertaining and expecting state which makes Sheldon a very interesting and extremely
amusing character.
Sheldon Cooper is a reflection of perhaps
many people in the world who suffer from this condition, however, being part of
a series it shows on the one hand the challenges of people who have the
syndrome, and on the hand it shows us that despite social inabilities a person
could be integrated to society just by having the rest of people accepting the
intelligence over the lack of social skills, and also, paying closer attention
to the amusing and funny aspects of a person trying to fit in, more than the
difficulties they may have or the things they may not succeed in doing, such as
having a fluent relationship with the neighbour.
